Increasing temperatures and humidity levels lead to running mascaras, oily complexions, and the dreaded F word—frizz. When heat and humidity strike, don’t panic—my heat-busting beauty tricks and products are perfect for summer.
High temperatures cause makeup to smudge, run and fade—when considering a summer makeup routine, it’s important to search for products with staying power. Look for foundations, eyeliners, eye shadows and other makeup products claiming to be “long-lasting.”
When it comes to mascara, remember there is a difference between waterproof and water-resistant. Waterproof mascaras allow one to fully submerge under water without her mascara running and are great for those wanting to wear makeup while swimming; water-resistant mascaras only withstand slight contact with water. These mascaras are likely to run when submerged underwater.
Remember to use a facial moisturizer, blemish balm or foundation containing sunscreen when out in the sun; this is crucial for protecting the face’s sensitive skin. When purchasing products containing sunscreen, examine labels for one that are oil-free. Using a BB cream in place of a heavy foundation is often best for summer because they feel lighter on the skin and are likely to contain sunscreen, along with other ingredients that even the skintone and brighten the complexion.
If using foundation is a must, it is important to first apply a foundation primer. A foundation primer is a product that creates a barrier between foundation and skin; when applied before foundation, a primer allows for a smoother foundation application, while increasing the foundation’s staying power.
Oil absorbing sheets are a great tool for summer, as they remove oil from the face. Keep a small package in a purse, beach bag or backpack for a go-to shine remover.
When it comes to lip products during the summer, steer clear of expensive lipsticks—carrying these in your purse on a hot day may turn into a melty mess—they also tend to smudge easily when in the sun. Opt instead for a tinted lip balm with SPF, which will add color to the lips while protecting them from the sun.
To minimize frizz during the summer, it’s important to use a diffuser attachment when blow drying hair; when hair is completely dry, switching the blow dryer’s heat setting to cool before blasting the hair with the cool air will also reduce frizz.
