Shopping at a thrift shop is an easy way to switch up your wardrobe without spending tons of money each season. One of the most common things I hear as a stylist though is that people feel overwhelmed in stores like Goodwill.
Since I’ve been thrifting since high school, I’ve become good at working through the clutter to find those hidden gems. Here are my top three tips to help you do the same.
1. Start with a Shopping List
This is one of my top tips as a stylist no matter where you’re planning to shop. I always keep a list of pieces I want for my wardrobe with me. This helps me be intentional when shopping so I don’t end up with 10 black tees (even if they’re cute and they fit!) and instead I search for pieces to help me create even more looks with what I already have. Every time you are getting dressed and think something like, “I really wish I had _____ to go with this piece,” jot it down on your list. I had neutral blazers written on my list, so when I found this one at Goodwill, I knew it was a smart buy that I would wear often.
2. Shop by Style & Color
To avoid overwhelm, lean into the fact that thrift stores are usually sorted by style and color. Don’t be afraid to skip those sections that don’t fit your style. Let yourself focus on the areas of the store that have pieces on your shopping list and colors you look good in.
3. Trust Your Gut
This is something I don’t think people realize they have the power to do, but you know what you like. In a sea of clothes, if a piece stands out to you, there’s a reason for that. Put it in your cart and try it on. Don’t be so concerned about brand, size or quality until you are in the dressing room. If a piece fits and you examine it and it’s in good shape, consider it a win.
